Section 1: Coaching and Sports Psychology

Section 2: Introduction to Sports Science

Apply the scientific principles underlying high-level performance. Use the OPT™ model to structure training programs that deliver results, from warm-up to recovery. Understand how the body adapts to physical training and strength training, and apply biomechanics and movement science to improve athletic performance. This section bridges the gap between theory and practice, giving you the tools you need to design smarter, more effective programs for athletes of all levels.

Section 3: Assessments, Testing, and Tracking

Accurately assess athletes to improve their performance. Conduct intake sessions, evaluate their movement and mobility, and analyze their physiological needs. Use advanced testing protocols to collect measurable data and track their progress over time. Apply this information to refine training design and ensure that programs are tailored to each athlete’s goals. This section gives you the tools you need to assess, track, and optimize performance with confidence.

Section 4: Components of the Integrated Training Model

Train athletes with precision across all performance domains. Incorporate flexibility, strength, and balance exercises to improve movement efficiency and stability. Use plyometrics and reactive strength to develop explosive power, and master SAQ techniques to improve speed and agility. Design resistance and Olympic weightlifting programs that build strength and resilience. Optimize energy systems and recovery strategies to help athletes stay at the top of their game. This section provides the tools needed to train well-rounded, high-performing athletes.

Section 5: Program Design

Design smarter programs that deliver measurable results. Apply the principles of biomechanical development and periodization to promote optimal performance throughout training cycles. Use the OPT™ model to develop personalized plans for strength, speed, and recovery. Create injury prevention strategies and return-to-play protocols. Train young athletes with their long-term development in mind. This section gives you the tools needed to program with precision and help athletes progress at every stage of their journey.

Section 6: Nutrition and Supplementation

Optimize performance through smart nutritional strategies. Apply evidence-based approaches to energy intake, macronutrients, hydration, and feeding protocols that support athletic performance. Explore the role of supplements and ergogenic aids, identifying safe and effective options that complement a balanced diet. This section will enable you to guide athletes in optimizing their nutrition to improve their strength, endurance, and recovery.

Practical information

The Performance Improvement Coaching exam is taken online via your client portal. Once you've finished studying the course materials, you'll have 365 days to take the exam. This exam includes:

  • 100 multiple-choice questions

  • 90 minutes to complete

  • 70% required to pass

  • Three exam attempts included

Required materials

The NASM platform is in English, but you can use current technology to translate the content

TO ACCESS CONTENT IN OTHERS LANGUAGES:

  • You must use the Google Chrome browser
  • Install a translation extension (Google Translate or Deepl)

You can complete the Performance Improvement Coaching specialization program at your own pace. The course materials are entirely online and adaptable to your schedule, and accessible from a computer or mobile device such as a phone or tablet.

Prerequisites
  • NASM CPT certification; or;
  • Bachelor's degree in health or fitness; or;
  • Accredited health and fitness certification or recognized certification in the field of health or wellness

Certificate obtained

You will receive a NASM certificate that grants you 1.9 CEUs.

You will have one year from the date of registration to take your exam and five years to access the course content.

Once you have passed the exam, your NASM Performance Enhancement specialization will never expire.
